Machine Mavericks FIRST Robotics Team – From conception, through construction, to competition
This story is about the Machine Mavericks, a community-based robotics team that was founded by Olivia O’Driscoll, a 15 year old grade 10 student from Leahurst College and Ella Hsu, a 16 year old grade 11 student from Regiopolis Notre-Dame High School, both of Kingston. The team was formed in 2018 by the two teenagers and it is now composed of more than 20 high school students from various schools around Kingston. The team was to participate in two FIRST “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” Robotics Competitions in 2020 but only completed one at Durham College in February before the pandemic restrictions cancelled the rest of the season.
